Near Real-Time analysis of stratospheric composition
by the BASCOE Data Assimilation System

BIRA-IASB is in charge of the monitoring and evaluation of the stratospheric composition products delivered by MACC. In this context, we have setup the BASCOE assimilation system to deliver near real-time analyses and forecasts of the chemical composition of the stratosphere.

Here is our latest analysis of ozone at 50 hPa. Click the figure to browse the plots for other chemical species and validity times.

The product displayed here is the ozone analysis of Aura-MLS level 2 standard products by the BASCOE data assimilation system. The fields are interpolated at a pressure of 50 hPa to allow an easy comparison with the corresponding MACC products. For this application, the BASCOE DAS is run in the following configuration:

  • The following species are assimilated: O3, H2O, HNO3, HCl, HOCl, N2O
  • Global horizontal grid with a 3.75° longitude by 2.5° latitude resolution.
  • Vertical grid is hybrid-pressure and consists in 37 levels extending from 0.01 hPa to the surface, most of them lying in the stratosphere.
  • dynamical fields from ECMWF operational 6-hourly analysis.
  • timesteps of 20 minutes, output every 3 hours
